We are thrilled to welcome Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jodi Kantor as our special guest. Jodi is an investigative reporter at the New York Times. She notes on her website that her “job is to illuminate how power operates and coax out secrets that others assume can’t be told”

Jodi Kantor has reported on everything from how tough it is for hourly workers to pump breast milk on the job to the Harvey Weinstein investigation that helped ignite the #MeToo movement and spur cultural, corporate and legal changes around the globe. Her current work is to illuminate the Supreme Court, including the behind-the-scenes story of how the justices overturned the constitutional right to abortion, the troubled investigation into the leak of that opinion, and a secret influence effort by anti-abortion activists and another alleged breach.

And she has just released a new book-How to Start . How to Start is a statement of faith for young people as they make their way through uncertain times, offering wisdom, strategy, and a set of aspirations to launch their careers and last their whole lives.

Obituaries have a life of their own. They often provide a window into the lives of people we knew or perhaps wish we had known. The obituaries in the Provincetown Independent are one of the most talked about pieces in the paper.

Phoebe Judge, creator of the popular podcast “This Is Love” on Vox invited Ed Miller, editor of the Provincetown Independent to be on her show for an episode on the story of obituaries. We heard from friends near and far about it and decided to continue the conversation. We hope you will join us.

We are delighted to welcome author Dennis Minsky to the Spring Reading Series. A long-time resident of Provincetown after hitchhiking there in 1968, Minsky has worked as a wildlife biologist at the Cape Cod National Seashore, as a guide with Art’s Dune Tours, and, since 1995, as a naturalist with the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch.

Since 2019, Minsky has chronicled the town, its people, history, and natural history in a column, “The Year-Rounder,” published in the Provincetown Independent. His book, Peculiar and Superior is a collection of these essays.

According to author Philip Hoare, “Whales, birds, artists, plumbers, dogs, buildings, everyday frustrations, quiet successes: Minsky’s real-time cast and setting create a revealing mosaic of what it is like to live in the 21st century with all its joys and pressures, its forebodings and its ecstasies, and he does it with enviable empathy and a great deal of wry humour.”

Dennis will read selections from the book along with new work and discuss how he came to write it, with a focus on the natural and human history of the Outer Cape.

With thanks to innkeepers Marirose and Bernie Lynch, we will be gathering at their charming Inn at the Oaks in Eastham -space is limited so be sure to get your tickets today!

Jeremiah Ariaz is a professor of art at Louisiana State University and an award-winning photographer. His photographs examine the constructs of American identity within personal, community, and political contexts.

Ariaz visited his home state of Kansas before the 2020 election on a quest to discover what democracy looked like in rural America. This goal landed him in a newsroom at a small rural newspaper in Kansas. The Fourth Estate features newspaper offices across his home state of Kansas. The photographs celebrate the civic function, labor, and technology at the heart of local journalism, while also documenting an industry under threat, as are the ideals of democracy the industry upholds.
