Jeremiah Ariaz is a professor of art at Louisiana State University and an award-winning photographer. His photographs examine the constructs of American identity within personal, community, and political contexts.

Ariaz visited his home state of Kansas before the 2020 election on a quest to discover what democracy looked like in rural America. This goal landed him in a newsroom at a small rural newspaper in Kansas.The Fourth Estate features newspaper offices across his home state of Kansas. The photographs celebrate the civic function, labor, and technology at the heart of local journalism, while also documenting an industry under threat, as are the ideals of democracy the industry upholds.
